Artificial intelligence — Glossary
Computer systems designed to perform tasks that typically require human cognitive abilities, such as perception, language use, planning, or decision support.
Full definition
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the field and set of techniques for building machines that can carry out functions associated with intelligent behavior. That includes recognizing patterns in data, interpreting natural language, controlling robots, recommending actions, and solving problems under uncertainty.
AI is broader than any single algorithm. It includes symbolic reasoning, search and optimization, probabilistic models, and machine learning. Most deployed systems are narrow: they excel at defined tasks under specific conditions rather than matching human general intelligence. Evaluating AI requires looking at data, objectives, failure modes, and human oversight—not only marketing claims.
