Vector database — Glossary

A database optimized to store embeddings and perform approximate nearest neighbor similarity search.

Also known as: vector store

Full definition

Vector databases index high-dimensional embeddings so applications can retrieve semantically similar items quickly. They underpin semantic search and retrieval-augmented generation at scale.

Production deployments combine vectors with metadata filters for tenancy and access control, and often hybridize with keyword search for identifiers and rare terms.

Re-embed content when the embedding model changes, and evaluate recall with labeled queries.
